Philippine's own version of the R&B princess is Kyla who was born January 5, 1981. Kyla entered the mainstream music industry thru a door known to many singers and aspiring ones- and that is thru singing contests. It is with the 'Tanghalan ng Kampeon' where Kyla was first introduced to the public. But it was with 'Hamon sa Kampeon' on DZRH where Kyla made her biggest success prior to her entry to the show business and the music industry. She won the said event in 1991.
Eventually she became champion on the then popular 'Tanghalan ng Kampeon' on 1993 and she was the champion for seven weeks. And on November of the same year, Kyla won the grand prize with the song 'I am Changing'. She is also a college graduate, with a degree of BS Mass Communication. She officially started her career in 2001 and this was the time when she released her 10-track album under EMI Philippines. In the same year, she won the MTV Video Music Awards as 2001 Southeast Asian Viewer's Choice Award. Almost all of her albums are released by EMI Philippines. Kyla is one of the major stars under EMI Philippines. Kyla is considered by her mother studio and the general public as the ultimate R&B princess. She was the face and the voice of R&B in the country, when R&B is beginning to pick up and beginning to get a loyal following. The singer is known for her wide range of voice and known as well for her use of melisma, her belting and the use of head tone technique and she is also known for her husky voice. This use of the husky voice helped her establish her R&B roots and made her the princess of R&B. Kyla is not only busy producing albums and busy promoting her shows and concerts. The singer is an active entertainer too on television. She is a mainstay in 'SOP Rules' which is a variety show aired every Sunday on GMA Channel 7 network. She is also working with other products of singing contests like Jonalyn Viray, Maricris Garcia and Aicelle Santos. The singer is also working on 'Popstar Kids' a talent show for kids and this is aired on QTV, which is a sister station of GMA 7 network. Kyla also dabbled in acting for some time. For example she acted as the young 'Sarah Geronimo' in her life story over at 'Magpakailanman' which is another show on GMA 7 network. She was also seen during the second match-up between Manny Pacquiao, the country's premier boxing sports hero and Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico. Kyla also collaborated with many local and international artists.

After releasing her fourth album, "Not Your Ordinary Girl," RnB Princess Kyla continues to lord it over on radio with hit singles, one after another. A remake of a Michael Jackson original, "Human Nature," kicked off "Not Your Ordinary" perfectly. It shot right to number one in major radio stations, receiving tremendous airplay and nonstop requests.

Next came the title track, "Not Your Ordinary Girl." The breezy urban song written by none other than Jay-R, features Kyla rapping with newbie Jimmy Muna. Just like "Human Nature" before it, "Not Your Ordinary Girl" instantly became a favorite amongst the most loyal Kyla fans and regular radio listeners. Its cute music video, which broke into the Top 10 of video countdowns in music channels, was directed by acclaimed music video director, Jeffrey Tan.

Upcoming single is Kyla's soulful rendition of Ella Mae Saison's "If The Feeling Is Gone," which is sure to become the anthem for all the broken hearted. .

Our very own RnB Princess Kyla is definitely the farthest thing from ordinary. As her signature hit "Not Your Ordinary Girl" suggests, Kyla leaves no room for doubt. She is really worth the RnB royalty title.

Kyla began her singing career when at 14 she joined a band that performed nightly in a five-star hotel lounge. Her love for music began even earlier when as a child, her parents made her listen to musical geniuses like Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. She grew up listening to jazz music. But as she grew older, the music around her evolved and she was able to expand her repertoire to include the music of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Brandy, Beyonce and other powerful black singers who are widely known for their RnB music.

In 1993, she won the grand prize in the popular Tanghalan Ng Kampeon. After joining several other singing competitions, Kyla was signed to EMI Philippines and immediately released her debut album, "Way to Your Heart."

Kyla has since released a string of albums that contained superb hits. She has also won awards from MTV Pilipinas, Awit Awards, Metropop and Himig Handog. She is seen regularly at the Sunday noontime show S.O.P. where she wows the viewers with her breezy vocal style.

Great music luminaries laud her and support her by writing songs for her. She did a duet of the song "Can We Stop and Talk Awhile" with no less than Mr. Pure Energy himself Gary Valenciano. African-American singer-songwriter Keith Martin describes Kyla's singing as "a rare gift."

After her indelible hit after another, Kyla is now a shiny blend of singer-songwriter sensitivity and a big voiced RnB as she releases her fifth album under EMI Phils entitled [Beautiful Days] where each track takes you to the emotional high of love to return and the lows of a love unrequited in five covers and nine original singles. [Beautiful Days] will be out on June 3, 2006 in all record bars.

[Beautiful Days] features the first single [Ngayong Wala Ka Na,] a sumptuous combination of soul and heart with the song's composer, arranger and producer is RnB hit maker himself, Keith Martin. This song is also written by Jason Balibay and Diana Dayao. You can't help but feel every deep of sorrow that she wrings out of this lost-love ballad which is now playing on radios.

Kyla's past albums continue showing in sales at leading record bars, fourth album called 'Not Your Ordinary Girl' is nearing its Double Platinum status. She remains a proof that heartfelt rnb can still hold its own with her past hits like 'Hanggang Ngayon,' 'I Feel For You,' 'If The Feeling Is Gone' etc.

And as she enjoys her feat, Kyla have also started writing songs for her fifth album. She adds "I wrote 'Beautiful Days' and 'How Am I Gonna Tell You.' The story of love gone wrong unfolds against a melodic back-drop of contemporary RnB with Kyla's remakes of 'Doin' Just Fine' which is originally sang by the famous group Boys II Men and 'Without You' also originally sang by Charlie Wilson. Kyla graces post-relationship songs about getting back on your feet again after a bad break-up. Another cover is 'Cupid' originally from the rnb singer/producer/songwriter Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds' popular urban ballads.

Another company of Kyla's other great songs in the new album is 'Now And Forever,' the original soundtrack for GMA Channel 7's TV drama series with the same title; and a duet with the RnB singer, Jay-R, is the song 'Say That You Love Me' is also a remake of Basil Valdez' hits. Same version has also been used for GMA Films' movie 'Say That You Love Me.'

Her appealing voice, fuel of warmth and tenderness made Kyla the star in our midst. And after something she borrowed, there is something new which goes from 'I Wish You Love' with its luxuriant melody to truth-searching 'Nasaan Ka Na' to slow RnB-ish love song 'I Wish Wasn't,' infectious and up-tempo feel to blend of rnb and pop 'Love Is.' Keith Martin and Aliyah Parks original composition entitled 'The Hurt I'd Go Through' also flows down smoothly with Kyla's airy vocals even felt more comforting.

Aside from Kyla's album she also hosts Popstar Kids on QTV and SOP in GMA7. Kyla will also be part in musical plays and be performing shows abroad.

Kyla, touted as the country's RnB princess, shares her experience in this album as she goes "It's still all about love at the same time, lost love. And apparently, there are songs that I have given more emotions withdrawn from the song's lyrics alone because right now I am too happy to sing sad songs. But then again, I still did my best to put myself in that position and record it and made it sound like it's real. I love to sing with justice, like it's really happening. For me, I think that's the key... sing from within".

Self-assured, illuminating performance underscores Kyla a boundless passion for her craft. She explains 'Beautiful Days' for me means moving forward, moving ahead, looking at things in a beautiful way."

One of the music industry’s most promising singers, having won awards from MTV Pilipinas and Awit Awards, Kyla is all set to prove that she has what it takes, and more.If you ask pop/r&b singer kyla what her greatest achievement is, she’ll probably say its winning Best New Artist and Best video at the MTV Pilipinas and Awit Awards last year. And it is… or was. On second thought, these awards (among the others she has already received since then) suddenly paled in comparison to what the 23-year-old achieved a few months ago.“I graduated from the Philippine Christian University last March,” smiles Kyla, who took up Mass Communication. “I’ve received a lot of awards (for my music), but I have to say that getting my diploma would be the best. I humbly offer it to my parents and siblings for their unending support.”It’s also another feather to add to Kyla’s(Melanie Calumpad in real life) now colorful cap. The success of her two albums, Way to your heart and Kyla, has since made her one of – if not the – most promising female artist (which, incidentally, is an award she received from the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Foundation this year) in the country today.Now that she can fully concentrate on her career, Kyla is one happy – and busy – girl. Melanie Hernandez Calumpad, (born January 5, 1981) better known by her stage name Kyla is a Filipino R&B singer, and occasional actress. She is the only female artist from the Philippines who has won in the MTV Video Music Awards for 2001 MTV's Southeast Asian Viewers Choice Award along with Filipino bands Eraserheads and Parokya ni Edgar. She has collaborated with international artists such as Fra Lippo Lippi, Ronan Keating, British boy-band Blue, and Keith Martin. As of 2008, she is a performer in the television variety show SOP Rules.

Early life
Kyla was born and raised in Tondo, Manila. Her first experience of singing contests was through Tanghalan ng Kampeon although her first victory in the DZRH Hamon sa Kampeon in 1991. In 1993, she was champion for seven weeks in Tanghalan ng Kampeon and became the Grand Champion on November of that year with the song "I Am Changing".

She then joined the Wednesday group of That's Entertainment, an afternoon variety show on GMA Network. She graduated from the Philippine Christian University in March 2002, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communication.

Mainstream Success
After the release of her album Not Your Ordinary Girl, she held her Not Just Your Ordinary Girl Concert in the Araneta Coliseum.

As of 2008, Kyla hosts and performs in a weekly variety show, SOP Rules, aired on GMA Network every Sunday afternoons, and a kiddie talent search, Popstar Kids, aired on Q.

Gossips get more intense when Kyla was purportedly released by manager Cacai Velasquez, sister of Regine Velasquez. Kyla’s career is reportedly now handled by her parents. Some of Kyla’s fans welcome the hearsays, but others are against her “move.” Some believed that if Kyla transferred to ABS-CBN 2, it could help boost her career since little exposure is given to the singer in her current network. On the other hand, others don’t want Kyla to transfer as they said she is a “great loss” to GMA-7.
